Patxi Sarasola is a distinguished veterinarian with a PhD in Veterinary Pharmacology. He is based in the Basque Country, in the north of Spain, near Bilbao and San Sebastian. Patxi has over 30 years' of experience in the veterinary pharmaceutical industry, having initially worked for Pfizer, and later spending nearly 25 years in the clinical research organization (CRO) space.
Patxi's journey in veterinary science began with his degree in Spain, followed by a final year in Glasgow, Scotland. He then pursued a PhD in equine veterinary pharmacology, focusing on pharmacokinetics and antimicrobials. His career took a significant turn when he joined Pfizer in England where he worked in clinical research, managing projects for both companion animals and livestock.
In 2000, Patxi and his wife Janice founded Ondax Scientific, a CRO dedicated to providing clinical research and trial services for the animal health industry. Ondax quickly gained a reputation for high-quality work, flexibility, and commitment to client needs. The company specialized in confirming the efficacy and safety of new compounds in real patients, ensuring regulatory compliance and prioritizing animal welfare.
After 24 successful years, Ondax was acquired by Argenta, a global CRO and CDMO company. Patxi transitioned to a corporate role, eventually becoming the global head of CROs at Argenta overseeing operations in the United States, Germany, and Spain.
Throughout his career, Patxi has been committed to advancing veterinary science and improving animal health. He has navigated the challenges of patient enrollment, protocol compliance, and the evolving regulatory landscape. Patxi is also keenly aware of the potential impact of artificial intelligence on clinical trials, particularly in enhancing the objectivity and efficiency of assessments.
Currently, Patxi is taking a break after completing his tenure at Argenta. He plans to return to the animal health space as a consultant, helping small startups navigate the complexities of bringing new compounds from the lab to the commercial market.
In his personal life, Patxi enjoys gardening and cooking, finding satisfaction in growing his own vegetables and preparing meals with fresh produce. He is also an avid trekker, often exploring the mountains near his home.
