IN THIS EPISODE

In this episode of the Research Forward podcast, host David Mayo interviews Professor Adriana Tavares, a leading expert in translational molecular imaging and positron emission tomography (PET) imaging. Professor Tavares shares her extensive background in nuclear medicine, biomedical engineering, and radiotracer development, highlighting her journey from her academic beginnings to her current role at the University of Edinburgh.

The conversation delves into the intricacies of PET imaging, discussing its advantages over other imaging techniques like MRI and CT scans. Professor Tavares explains how PET imaging can detect diseases at very early stages by examining the function of organs and cells, rather than just their structure. They explore the development of new radiotracers, such as LW223, which has significant implications for diagnosing and treating diseases where inflammation plays a key role.

Additionally, they discuss the challenges of quantifying PET data and the potential of artificial intelligence to enhance image analysis. The episode also touches on the ethical considerations and advancements in reducing animal use in research through technologies like body-on-chip systems. Professor Tavares emphasizes the importance of mentorship and collaboration in advancing the field of PET imaging, offering valuable insights into the future of this transformative technology.

About Adriana Tavares

Professor Adriana Tavares is a leading expert in Positron Emission Tomography (PET) imaging, currently serving as the Head of the Preclinical PET Facility at the University of Edinburgh and a Professor of Translational Molecular Imaging. She is actively involved in developing new imaging tools to study disease progression and treatment efficacy, with over 70 peer-reviewed publications to her name.

Tavares is a member of the molecular imaging committee of the Scottish Imaging Network: A Platform for Scientific Excellence (SINAPSE) and co-leads the preclinical sub-group of the UK PET Network. She founded the PET is Wonderful meetings, which aim to enhance the visibility and vitality of PET research globally. Her academic journey includes a Nuclear Medicine BSc (Hons.) from the School of Health Technology of Porto, a Master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Porto, and a PhD in radiotracer development from the University of Glasgow.

Her career spans over 15 years in clinical and preclinical radionuclide imaging, including roles as an Image Processing Analyst and Imaging Consultant at Molecular NeuroImaging (MNI) in the USA. At the University of Edinburgh, she continues to advance the field of PET imaging through her innovative research and leadership.
